Ispoketheotherdayofthecolossalmilitarydisas-terwhichoccurredwhentheFrenchHighCom-mandfailedtowithdrawthenorthernarmiesfromBelgiumatamomentwhentheyknewthattheFrenchfrontwasdecisivelybrokenatSedanandontheMeuse.Thisdelayentailedthelossoffifteenorsix-teenFrenchdivisionsandthrewoutofactionthewholeoftheBritishExpeditionaryForce.
OurarmywereindeedrescuedbytheBritishNavyfromDunkirk，butonlywiththelossofalltheircannon，vehiclesandmodernequipment.
Thislossinevitablytooksomeweekstorepair，andinthefirsttwooftheseweekstheBattleofFrancehadbeenlost.NowIputallthisaside.Iputitontheshelffromwhichthehistoriansmayselecttheirdocu-mentsinordertotelltheirstory.Wehavetothinkofthefutureandnotofthepast.TherearemanywhowishtoholdaninquestupontheconductofthegovernmentandofParlia-mentduringtheyearswhichleduptothiscatas-trophe.Theywishtoindictthosewhowerere-sponsiblefortheguidanceofouraffairs.
Thisalsowouldbeafoolishandperniciousprocess.Therearetoomanyinit.Leteachmansearchhisconscienceandsearchhisspeeches，asIfrequentlysearchmine.OfthisIamquitesure，thatifweopenaquarrelbetweenthepastandthepresentweshallfindthatwehavelostthefuture.

WealsohavetheDominionarmieshere.TheCanadianshadactuallylandedinFrance，buthavenowbeensafelywithdrawnmuchdisappointedandareherewithalltheirartilleryandequipment.Theseveryhigh-classforcesfromthedominionswillnowtakepartinthedefenseoftheirmothercountry.Thus，theinvasionofGreatBritainatthistimewouldrequirethetransportacrosstheseasofhostilearmiesonaverylargescaleandaftertheyhadbeensotransported，theywouldhavetobecontinuallymaintainedwithalltheimmensemassofmunitionsandsupplieswhicharerequiredforcontinuousbattle，ascontinuousbattleitwouldbe.
