小人物的大情怀——欧亨利短篇小说赏析

【摘要】被赞誉为现代短篇小说之父的欧亨利(O. Henry)是美国著名批判现实主义作家,由于他出色的文学才华和高超的写作技巧,人们尊称欧.亨利、俄国作家契科夫和法国作家莫泊桑为世界三大短篇小说大师.欧.亨利本身就是一个传奇人物,一生充满了浪漫色彩,他的个人生活经历曲折坎坷,历经苦难.他的作品构思新颖巧妙,语言幽默诙谐,人物个性鲜明,情节离奇曲折,尤其善于用"双关语"对资本主义的腐朽和社会的冷漠进行了无情的讽刺.他作品中那些卑微的"小人物"虽然面对生活苦苦挣扎,但面对他人却能表现出真诚的关爱甚至做出牺牲.在这些"小人物"身上散发着人文主义的美丽光辉,具有极强的艺术感染力令万千读者无法忘记他们那带泪的微笑和心酸的快乐.%O·Henry, a famous American short-story writer of critical realism who was skillful in writing about the ordinary people life with surprise endings. He was called the American Guy De Maupassant. Typical for O·Henry's stories is a twist of plot which turns on an ironic or coincidental circumstance. His stories are known for their wit, wordplay, characterization and the clever use of twist endings. O·Henry's work provides one of the best English examples of catching the entire flavor of an age. Among his greatest tales are some of his most famous, like The Social Triangle which humorously skewers classism by having a down and out protagonist end up the object of affection to a gratuitous, social climber. O·Henry had an inimitable hand for isolating some element of society and describing it with an incredible economy and grace of language.
