I stepped into the station café. I looked at the clock there. It was only twenty to twelve. I found a seat opposite a large mirror on the wall. Just then a friend of mine called Jim came in and sat with me.

What time is your bus? asked Jim. Oh, theres plenty of time yet, I answered.

Oh, Ill get you some more tea then, said Jim.

We talked while drinking. Then I looked at the clock again. My God! The clock is going to backward? I cried. A few minutes ago it was twenty to twelve and now its half past eleven.

According to a study by Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK, giving up smoking is not only good for heart and lungs, and its also good for human memory. It shows that stopping smoking can strengthen someones ability to remember everyday things. The research looked at three groups of people---27 smokers, 18 ex-smokers and 24 people who had never smoked. They were all asked to remember to do several tasks in 15 different locations in a university for tests. For example, they had to check for text messages on their cell phone when they were getting close the library.

The study found that smokers could remember just 59% of the tasks; people who used to smoke but had now given up remembered 74%; and those who had never smoked managed to remember 81% of the tasks. The team is now planning to research how second-hand smoke can affect health and everyday memory.
