Pirate Party Wins and Enters The European Parliament

Written by Ernesto on June 07, 2009

The Pirate Party has won a huge victory in the Swedish elections and is marching on to Brussels. After months of campaigning against well established parties, the Pirate Party has gathered enough votes to be guaranteed a seat in the European Parliament.

When the Swedish Pirate Party was founded in early 2006, the majority of the mainstream press were skeptical, with some simply laughing it away. Today, the Pirate Party accomplished what some believed to be the impossible, by securing a seat in the European Parliament.

“Together, we have today changed the landscape of European politics. No matter how this night ends, we have changed it,” Pirate Party leader Rick Falkvinge said. “The citizens have understood it’s time to make a difference. The older politicians have taken apart young peoples’ lifestyle, bit by bit. We do not accept that the authorities’ mass-surveillance,”

Families of victims of the landslide that reportedly killed 35 people in  Wulong countyChongqing will receive at least 200,000 yuan, the standard compensation payment for fatalities from negligent accidents, local officials said.

Although officials with Wulong county have said there was "no clear indication" human error caused the landslide, various local sources claimed excessive drilling and mining were to blame.

The privately-owned iron ore mine, named Sanlian and boasting a capacity of 100 tons a day, had neglected government warnings to stop production because of "possible geological dangers", said several miners.

Shanghai Buys Itself a Makeover Before a Fair

Published: May 30, 2009

SHANGHAI — Less than a year after Beijing hosted the Summer Olympics, Shanghai is gearing up for its own mega-event: the 2010 World Expo.

Although the World Expo may have lost much of the luster it had when it was better known as the World’s Fair, and though the global financial crisis drags on, apparently no one has told Shanghai: the city is planning to spend $45 billion,  to upgrade Shanghai’s infrastructure, build new transportation links and create what organizers promise will be the biggest and most extravagant Expo ever.

Architects and city planners say Shanghai is using the Expo as an excuse to go on a huge spending spree that will help stimulate a weakening local economy but also push forward an already breathtaking transformationin this city of 18 million.
