dinner通常有两种解释，正餐或宴会（比较正式的，会喝酒的那种），可以是中午，也可以是晚上：

外国人一般喜欢把最重要的一餐放在晚上，所以习惯上说到dinner一般指晚餐，但dinner本身并不特指晚餐。而supper就是指晚餐，是相对于breakfast和lunch来讲的，并不特别指重要的正餐，是较随便的那种（来自法语的‘汤”）。有时也指晚餐会（供以晚餐的舞会或集会supper club =night club夜总会）；需要注意的是，当中午是正餐（dinner)时,晚餐就可以是supper.
